He really liked Roy Buchanan. In a video titled "The Greatest Unknown Guitarist” produced for PBS in the early 70's Garcia is interviewed and he raves about Roy's playing.

If your familiar with Roy you can hear the influenced in Garcia's playing. For example In the DVD "Down Hill form here” West LA freeway JG solo contains a lot of the structure of Buchanan's "I'm a Ram" solo. Lots of others.. Your be listening and then think..."There's a Roy riff"

Two weeks after Roy committed suicide played Garcia a "He's Gone" during the Landover MD show (Roy used to live nearby in Reston VA.). Maybe just a coincidence.

Roy Buchanan ...thanks for reminding me , was a true legend and American Master like Jerry .

That song "I am a Ram" is almost too scary...makes you jump right out of your socks ! And for an encore that will get you down on your knees searching for your very soul try

" Drowning on Dry Land "

Of course , alot can be said of substance abuse with both guitarists , in the end we get blessed with some genius at the cost of some longevity .

wow so I took your advice and followed up on Roy Buchanan. I am completely blown away, I dont think Ive ever heard anyone draw more expression out of the guitar. Ive ALWAYS considered Jimi to be the GOAT, but Im not sure anymore after listening to this guy...

I rarely get chills up my back from listening to music, but this is just too much...
